3. Crescentia alata Kunth

Description : A crooked tree, 4–10 m high. Leaves 3-foliolate, with winged petiole, fasciculate on the old branches and stem; leaflets lanceolate-narrowly obovate-spathulate 1–4 by 0.4–1.2 cm, sessile; winged petiole 2.5–10.5 by 0.3–1.4 cm. Flowers 1–2-rami and cauliflorous, with a rancid odour. Calyx bi-lobed nearly to the base. Corolla thick, fleshy, 4–6 cm long, yellowish-green on the upperside, deep purple to brownish on the lower; lobes with purple venation. Fruit ± spherical, 5–10 cm diam, indehiscent, hard-shelled, with fleshy pulp.


Distribution : Native to C America (Mexico to Costa Rica).


Vernacular : Tinpet farang (ตีนเป็ดฝรั่ง).
