Description: Trees 5–10 m tall; bark smooth or scaly. Leaves opposite or subopposite, oblong to obovate-oblong, 2–7 cm long; base obtuse; apex acute; ± glaucous below; margin subentire, with glands near the base; secondary nerves 6–11 on each side; petioles 0.5-1 cm long, often persistent, thorn-like. Inflorescences panicle, 2–8 cm long; spikelets 2.5-4 cm, pubecent. Flowers whitish; lower receptacle 1–1.5 mm long, densely pubescent; upper receptacle campanulate, 2–3 mm long, glabrous outside, pubescent inside; bracteoles lanceolate, ca 1.5 mm long, caducous. Calyx 4-5; lobes triangular, ca 0.5 mm long, puberulous inside. Petal absent. Stamens 8 or 10, in 2 rows, inserted on upper receptacle at base and ca middle, long exserted; filaments 3.5–4 mm long; anthers versatile. Ovary inferior, 1-locule; ovules 2; style linear, 4–4.5 mm long; stigma inconspicuous. Fruit a dry pseudocarp, ovoid to ellipsoid, 2.5–3 cm long, longitudinally (4–)5-winged, unequal; wings coriaceous, 5–8 mm wide, light green, tinged reddish purple, turning brown. |
