Description: Climber 2–7 m long, with rootstock, monoeciuos. Tendrils 10–20 cm long, 2-branched. Probract obovate, 2–5 mm long. Leaves deeply 3–7 palmately lobed, 4–16 cm in diam.; margin dentate or entire; leaf blade few hairy on veins of lower surface; petioles 2–7 cm long. Inflorescences in short racemes, male flowers up to 10, co-axillary with few to 5 female flowers, or without male flowers. Flowers: pedicels to 2 cm long in male, 1–5 mm long in female; receptacle 2–4 mm. Sepals 5, linear, to 2 mm long. Corolla 5-lobed; tube to 2 mm long; lobes 3–5 mm. Stamens 3, inserted upper part of the receptacle-tube; filaments to 1.5 mm; 2 anthers 2-thecors, 1 anther 1-thecous; thecae plicate, 2–3 mm in diam. Disc annular. Ovary ovoid, 4–5 mm long; style 3-armed, 1.5–2 mm long, arms 1–3 mm long. Fruits berry-like, 1–5, subglobose, 1.5–2.5 cm in diam., bright red with white bands. Seeds to ca 12, obovoid, 5–8 mm long, convex faces with thick groove margins, pitted.

 

 

Distribution: Africa, tropical Asia, Australia and Pacific, in Thailand found in forest margin, disturbed or limestone areas, up to 1,600 m.
