Description: Climber, to 5 m long or more; stem ± 4-angled, hirsute at node. Leaves with pinnate nerves, opposite, elliptic to ovate-oblong, (4-)10–14 cm long; base broad cuneate, decurrent onto petiole; apex acuminate; margins obscurely toothed; blade sparsely hispid above; lateral veins 4–5 pairs; petiole 1.5–3(-7.5) cm long. Flower solitary, axillary, 4–5 cm. long; pedicel slender, 7–9 cm long; bracteoles pale reddish to reddish purple, split on one side, elliptic, 2–2.3 cm long, 5–7-nerved, densely glandular hairy, apex mucronate. Calyx annular, rim with unequally 10–14-toothed. Corolla white to pale purple with dark brown strips at the throat; tube 4–5 cm long, densely hispid at the base; limb of 5 ± equal lobes (2 upper and 3 lower); lobes orbicular, ± emarginate in lower lobes, 1.2–1.5 cm broad. Stamens didynamous; filaments densely hairy at base, lower 2 0.5–0.7 cm long, upper 2 1–1.2 cm long; anthers 0.7-1 cm, with bearded basal spurs and dense long hairs at the apex of the thecae. Disk thick. Ovary ovoid, 2–3 mm long, 4-lobed; style 2.5–3 cm long; stigma yellow, slightly bilobed, slightly exserted. Capsule glabrous, rounded, 1.8–2 cm long, beak 1.5–2.5 cm. Seeds reniform, ca 8 by 5 mm. |
Distribution: India, Nepal, Bhutan, China, Myanmar and northern Thailand, recorded from Mae Hong Son and Chiang Mai, disturbed areas in lower montane forest, 1,200–2,000 m. |
