Description: Herb annual, succulent; stems articulated, prostrate, rooting at nodes; leaf axils patent pilose. Leaves opposite, fleshy, flat, elliptic, ovate or obovate, 4–8 × 2–5 mm, slightly narrowed toward base, apex obtuse or acute. Flower solitary, surrounded by 4 or 5 involucres of leaves, white pilose. Sepals 2, connate at base, obovate-oblong, 2.5–3 mm, membranous, veined. Petals 4, yellow, oblong or broadly elliptic, 3–6 mm, connate at base, apex mucronate. Stamens 8–10, adnate to base of petals; filaments linear; anthers 2-loculed, introrse, dehiscence longitudinal. Ovary half-inferior; style linear; stigma (3- or) 4-lobed. Capsule globose, ca 2.5 mm, pericarp membranous. Seeds many, gray, subglobose, laterally compressed, ca 1 mm, muricate.

 

Distribution: Pantropical, native to Afric. Young shoots are eaten, it is used as medicine similar to Portulaca oleracea L.

Common name is chicken weed.

Thai name: ผักเบี้ยหนู (phak bia nu)
