Celastraceae

Description: Tree to ca 30 m tall. Stipules minute, caduceus. Leaves spiral, elliptic, oblong or ovate-oblong, 6.5–20 by 2–8 cm; apex acute to acuminate; base cunete to rounded; margin crenate or serrate, rarely entire; secondary nerves 6–11 each side; petioles 0.5–1.5 cm long. Inflorescences axillary, cymose; peduncle 5–8 mm long; 1 to many flowers. Flowers bisexual; pedicels 0.3–1 cm long. Calyx 5-lobed; lobes reniform or rounded, 1–2 mm in diam. Petals 5, imbricate; lobes ovate, obtuse, 2.5–3.5 by 1.75–2.5 mm. Stamens 5; filaments flat, ca 1 mm long, united at base; anthers bent inward in bud; connectives broad, separating the thecae. Pistil semi-globose or short conical, half immersed to the disc, upper half hollow; style columnar, raising from the bottom. Ovary many-loculed, irregularly superposed, each locule with 1 ovule. Fruits drupaceous, obovoid, hard, rough, 3–5 by 2–4.5 cm; pyrenes many, 1-seeded, flat, ellipsoil or ovoid, ca 8 x 5 mm.

 

 

Distribution: India, Myanmar, Indochina and Malesia, Philippines, New Guinea and throughout Thailand, evergreen and deciduous forests, forest margins, and also on limestones, to 1,000 m.
