Description: Tree, 10–25 m tall. Leaves alternate, imparipinnate, 30–70 cm including 10–25 cm long petioles; leaflets 3–9 pairs, opposite or lower ones alternate, elliptic to lanceolate or ovate-lanceolate, slightly oblique, 6–25 cm long; blades slightly glaucous and minutely pubescent below, apex acute to acuminate, base obtuse to rounded, lateral veins 8–15 on each side, petiolules 0.2–1 cm. Inflorescence terminal, racemose, erect, 20–45 cm long. Flowers zygomorphic, white to pink, marked with red striate; pedicel 2–4 cm. Calyx broadly campanulate, 1.5–2 cm long, 5-lobed. Petals 5, imbricate, unequal, obovate, 1.8–2 cm long, base rounded, short claw, partly adnate to calyx tube, upper petal hoodlike covering stamens and style. Stamens 8, attached to thin, annular nectary disc; filaments 2.5–3 cm, apex curved, hairy at base. Ovary superior, sessile, 3–5-loculed, hairy; ovules 2 per locule; style 3–4 cm, bent apically, hairy; stigma capitate, minute. Capsule ellipsoid, 3–4 cm long; valves 3–5, thickened, warty, minutely hairy; fruit pedicel 2.5–3.5 cm long. Seeds ellipsoid-globose, 1.5–2.5 long, aril orange.

 

 

Distribution: Distributed in China, Taiwan, N Vietnam, in Thailand only recorded from Doi Phukha, Nan, montane forest, 1,200–1,500 m.
