Description: Tree to ca 30 m tall, monoecious, male and female inflorescences separate in the same branch. Indumentum tomentose on young twigs, stipules, leaves beneath, petioles, inflorescences and perianth. Twigs lenticelate. Stipules linear, to ca 1 cm long, caduceus. Leaves alternate, oblong or obovate-oblong to lanceolate or obovaty-lanceolate, 8–21 cm long; margins dentate; tertiary nerves scaraliform; petioles 1–2.5 cm long. Male inflorescences catkins, clustered, pedulose, 2–10 cm long. Male flowers cluster, 1–3 flowers; perianth 5–6. Female inflorescences spike, solitary, erect, 1–3 cm long. Female flowers solitary, 3–7 flowers, as in male flowers; ovary inferior, 3-locolar; ovules 2 in each locule; style usually 3. Acorns 1–2 per inflorescences, glaucescent, ovoid, 2.5–5 x 2.5–3.5 cm including cupule, stalk short. Cupule cup or dish-shaped, enclosing less than half of the nuts; scales imbricate, 6–12 rings.

 

 

Distribution: Myanmar, Vietnam, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo. In Thailand scattered in northern and northeastern areas, more common in the peninsular, in evergreen and hill evergreen forests, 800–1,700 m.
