Description: Rhizomatous sedge. Clums slightly bulbose at base, to 70 cm long. Leaves basal and cauline, linear to ca 50 cm. long; apex acuminate, blade glabrous, hirsute or ciliate; leaf-sheath tubular, to 10 cm long. Involucral bracts 4–5, lanceolate to linear, to 22 cm long; apex acuminate, deflexed, basal part white above. Inflorescences solitary, capitate with 4–16 spiklets; spikelets ovate-oblong 0.5–1 cm long; glumes broad ovate, 3–5 mm. long, acute to obtuse, white or brown. Stamens 2–3; filament to ca 4.5 mm. long. Stigma 3, 1.5–3 mm long. Achenes biconvex, broad ovate, 1–1.5 mm long, apex arched with triangula style-base, brown to black, transversely rugulose.

Distribution: Native to Cantral and South America, wildely cultivated as ornamental.
