Description: Straggling shrub, spreading, to 2–3 m. tall, young twigs hairy. Stipules a pair, subulate, 5–6 mm long, hairy. Leaves alternate, broad ovate, 2–7 cm wild, 1–5.5 long, apex bifid 1/3–1/4, with broad sinus, apex rounded, glaucous below; basal nerves 7; petioles 0.5–1.5 cm. Raceme opposite leaves; peduncle stout, 0.5–1 cm long, 2–10 flowered; pedicels 2–3.5 cm long. Calyx 5, spathaceous, split one side, reflexed, 1.5–2 cm long. Petals crimson red, 5, unequal, lamina broad triangular, 1.5–2 cm long; claws filiform, to ca 1.5 cm long; anthers greyish black; staminodes 2–3, subulate 5–6 mm long. Ovary ca 1 cm long, pubescent, tapering to style; stipe ca 1.5 cm long; stigma minute. Pod oblong, narrowly below, beaked, stalk 1–2 cm. Seeds 3–5, elliptic, flattened, ca 1 cm long.

Distribution: South Africa, native to Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, South Africa and Swaziland. Commonly cultivated in tropic.
