Description: Shrub to small tree, 1–5 m tall; twigs 4-angled or winged; stellate tomentose on young twigs, leaves beneath, outside calyx and corolla tube, ovary and capsule. Stipules leaflike. Leaves opposite, oblong to lanceolate, 4–45 cm long; apex acuminate; base cuneate to decurrent on to petioles; margin crenate-serrate; secondary nerves 15–25 on each side; petioles sessile to subsessile. Inflorescences terminal, spicate, 5–20 cm long. Flowers many, clustered 1–3; sessile. Calyx campanulate, 3–6 mm long; lobes 4, triangular, ca 2 mm long. Corolla pale purple to pink, with an orange on throat; tube cylindrical, 0.8–1 cm long, inside villous upper parts; lobes slightly imbricate, suborbicular, 2–4 mm long. Stamens 4, inserted below corolla mouth, subsessile; anthers narrowly triangular, ca 2 mm long. Ovary superior, ovoid, 24 mm long, stellate tomentose, often with glandular hairs. Style simple, 0.5–3 mm long; stigma clavate. Capsules ellipsoid, 0.7–1 cm long. Seeds pale brown, ca 3 mm long, wings at both ends.

 

Distribution: India, Bhutan, Bangladesh, S China, Myanmar, Vietnam, northern Thailand, recorded from Doi Chiang Dao and Doi Pha Hom Pok in Chiang Mai, on limestone ridges, 1,600–2,200 m.
