Description: Perennial herb, 30–100 cm tall; rhizome creeping; roots fleshy; stem branched. Leaves alternate, elliptic to ovate-oblong, 5–8 cm long; apex acuminate; base obtuse to rounded; 3–7-veined; petioles 3–5 mm long. Inflorescences pseudolateral, umbellate, 3–10-flowered; peduncle usually shorter than pedicels; pedicels 1–2 cm, ridged, minutely papillose on ridges. Flowers campanulate, pinkish red to purple. Tepals 6, oblanceolate, 1.2–2 cm long, long spurred at base; spurs cylindric, straight to slightly recurved, 4–8 mm long. Stamens 6, inserted at the base of tepals; filaments 0.7–1.3 cm long, slightly flat; anthers 4–5 mm. Ovary 3-loculed, ca 3 mm long; style filiform, 5–9 mm long, 3-fid, recurved. Fruit a berry, subglobose, ca 1 cm in diam., turning black when ripe, usually with 2 seeds or more.

 

 

Distribution: India, Bhutan, S China, Myanmar, Vietnam, N & NE Thailand, usually in shaded dry evergreen and montan forests to ca 1,500 m.
