Description: Mycoparasitic herb, most parts white, rarely pink, turning black when dry, glabrous. Inflorescence erect, 1-flowered, scape10–30 cm tall. Bracts scalelike, glabrous, densely and thickened below the ground, bracts above soil thin, ovate to oblong, 1–2 cm long , margin entire or irregularly toothed. Flowers nodding, campanulate. Sepals 3–5, similar to bracts, oblong, 1–1.5 cm long. Petals 3–8, obovate-oblong, 1.2–2.2 cm long, fleshy, pubescent inside, base saccate, margin entire to irregularly denticulate, apex rounded. Stamens usually 10; filaments 1–1.5 cm long, pubescent; anthers yellowish brown, peltate, ca 2 mm in diam., connate, opening by an apical slit. Ovary glabrous, grooved, slightly longer than style; placenta axile; style 2–3 mm long, thick; stigma funnelform ca 4 mm in diam.; nectaries at base of ovary, 10 paired lobes. Capsules erect, ellipsoid, 1–1.5 cm long.

 

 

Distribution: N, C and upper S America, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Japan, Korea, Myanmar and N Thailand, recorded from Doi Inthanon in Chiang Mai, in montaneforest, ca 2,200 m.
