Description: Straggling shrub to erect to ca 5 m tall; old twigs glabracent, leticellate; densely pubescent to villose on young twigs, petioles, leaves beneath and inflorescences. Leaves alternate, elliptic to obovate, 6–15 cm long; apex acute or obtuse; base broadly cunete to rounded; secondary nerves 6–8 on each side; petioles 0.5–1.5 cm long. Inflorescences racemose, axillary, solitary or 2–3 clustered, sometimes branched; male ones elongate, 4–13 cm long; female 1–7 cm long. Flowers 4–5-merous, greenish; pedicels 1.5–2 mm long. Calyx divided near to base, lobes ovate to ovate-oblong, ca 1 mm long, puberulous, minute puntate, ciliate. Corolla conate at base, lobes oblong to lanceolate, ca 2.5 mm long, puberulose outside, papillose inside, dotted and with black glands. Stamens adnate to corolla base; filaments slightly shorter than corolla lobes; anthers ovate, ca 1 mm long, reduced in female. Ovary glabrous; style cylindrical, ca 1 mm long. Drupe globose, ca 4 mm in diam, wrinkled when mature; 1-seeded.

 

 

Distribution: India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam and most regions of Thailand except in the peninsular, scattered in deciduous dipterocarp and montane forests, 200–1,300 m.
