Description: Tree to c. 20 m tall. Leaves simple, alternate, obovate-oblong to oblanceolate, 12–18 cm long; apex acute to obtuse; base cuneate; blade coriaceous, glabrous; margins entire; secoundary nerve indistinct; petioles 1–1.5 cm long. Flowers axillary, solitary or a pair; pedicels 2–3 mm long; bracts 6–7, caducous. Sepals 5, imbricate, ovate to orbiculate, 1–1.5 cm long, hairy outside, persistent. Petals 5, imbricate, connate at base, broadly obovate with emarginated apex, 3.5–5.5 cm long. Stamens numerous; filaments 1.5–3 cm long, outer ones adbate to petals; anthers c. 2 mm long. Ovary superior, 5–locular, pubescent, 5–6 mm long; style 1.5–2 cm long, velutinous. Capsule cylindric, apex acute, 3–8 cm long; columella persistent to apex. Seeds many, flattened with obliquely winged above, 1.5–2 cm long including wing.

 

Distribution: China, Loas, Vietnam and NE Thailand, recorded only from Loei (Phu Kradueng, Phu Luang), by streams in montane forest, 1,200–1,300 m.
