Description: Lower shrub to tree, up to 12 m tall. Stipules minute, deciduous. Leaves simple, alternate, obovate-oblong to obovate-lanceolate, 6–25 cm long; apex acuminate, acute or obtuse; base acute, obtuse or rounded; margin serrate; petioles short, 0.1–0.5 cm long. Inflorescences terminal or lateral, thyrses, to ca 4 cm long; flowers many; pedicels 2–4 cm long; receptacle reddish green. Sepals 5, ovate-oblong, apex obtuse, 1.–1.6 cm long, enlarged in fruit. Petals 5–7, yellow, obovate, apex obtuse or rounded, 1.5–2.5 cm long, clawed. Stamens many, 2–3 whorls; filaments unequal, 0.3–0.7 cm long, outermost longest; anthers lanceolate to linear, 0.4–0.6 cm long. Carpels 6–15, obovoid. Style 1, gynobasic, persistent, 1–1.5 cm long; stigmas slightly lobed. Drupelets, 3–10 or 15, elliptic, inserted on accrescent receptacle, ca 1 cm long, shiny green turning black; persistent calyx to ca 2 cm long, reflexed.

 

Distribution: NE India , Pakistan, Myanmar, Indochina, Peninsular Malaysia and throughout Thailand, in mixed deciduous, dry deciduous, dry evergreen and evergreen forests, to 1,200 m.
