Description: Shrub or small tree, 3–15 m. tall, branches joint at the nodes. Leaves pinnate; petioles 0.5–1 cm. long; leaflets 2–3 pairs, opposite, obovate or elliptic, apex obtuse, base broadly cuneate, margin entire, sessile. Flowers terminal, cluster 3–4, bluish-violet, 5 merous. Sepal ovate, connate at base, small. Petals ovate or elliptic, ca 2 cm long. Stamens 10, free; anther dorsidixed, longitudinal slit. Ovary superior, style 1. Fruit a capsule, flat, heart-shape, 1.5–2 cm long, apiculate, margin thick, orangish yellow. Seeds 1–2.

 

Distribution: Native to South & Central America and Western Indes Islands.
