Description: Annual herb to small shrub, 1–1.5 m tall; bark smooth, fibrous; branches scattered, short. Leaves narrow lanceolate or hastate-lanceolate, 3–14 cm long, apex acuminate, base obtuse or cuneate, sparsely hairy on both surfaces, serrate; petioles to 1 cm long, hairy. Inflorescences axillary, short, 1–3 flowers; pedicels 0.1–0.2 cm. Flowers 5-merous, reddish or pink. Sepals connate at base, lobes narrow triangular, 0.5–0.7 cm long, apex hooked and curved. Petals bowl-shaped, ca 0.5–1.5 long, rounded or truncate at apex. Stamens 15, in 5 groups; staminodes 5 inserted between the group of stamens. Ovary superior, ovoid, hairy, 5 locules. Fruit capsule, globose, depressed at both ends, hairy, 1–1.5 cm dim., fruiting calyx persistent; seeds 10 or more.

 

 

Distribution: Widely distributed in India, China, Peninsular Malaysia and Thailand. Weeds in rice fields, open wet areas, under 100 m.Bark produces fibre for making ropes.
