Description: Leaves simple, alternate, cordate or 3–5 lobes, 8–20 x 4–12 cm; apex acuminate to cuspidate; base cordate to slightly oblique-auriculate; margin serrate to entire; secondary nerves palmate, 3–5 from base, upper nerves 3–7 pairs, tertiary nerves scalariform. Petioles 1.5–18 cm, pubescent. Inflorescences cymose panicle, axillary, pubescent, 1–5-flowered, 5–10 cm long. Flowers bisexual, 5-merous. Calyx free, oblong or ovate-oblong, 0.4–0.7 cm lomg. Petals free, alternate with sepals, spathulate with a concave claw near base, purplish-brown, 1.5–2 cm. long, sparsely hairs outside. Stamens 10, forming a corona, 5 fertile; anthers 2-lobed, extrose. Ovary sessile, oblong, with 5 longitudinal ridges, ca 0.5 cm long, sparsely hairy, 5-locular; style fusiform; stigma 5-lobed. Fruits capsule, conical, with 5 longitudinal wings, 2.5–3 x 4–6 cm, septicidally dehiscent into 5 valves; stalk to 4 cm long, hairy. Seeds many, wingless, black.

 

 

 

Distribution: Widely scattered from India, China, Malesia and Philippines to Australia. In Thailand, recorded from several provinces except in the northeastern areas. Locally common by stream in open areas in dry evergreen and evergreen forests, under 500 m.
