Description: Shrub, 1–2.5 m tall.  Leaves elliptic to obovate, 15–34 x 4.5–12 cm; apex acute to shortly acuminate; base cuneate; petioles 1.5–2 cm long.  Inflorescences axillary, pendulous, 5–15 cm long; bracts 3, caducous, leaving prominent crescent-shaped scars. Flowers bisexual, zygomorphic, ca 1–1.5 cm long; pedicels ca 1 cm long; sepals 5, uneaqual; petals 3, unequal, white and often purple or yellow tinged, upper two petals connate with ca 0.5 cm free parts, lower petal boat shaped with 2-lobed appendages; stamens 8, to ca 1.5 cm long, adnate to the corolla; disc annular; ovary 2-locular, partially winged; style elongate; stigma 2-lobed.  Fruits a 2-seeded dehiscent capsule, winged. Seeds black, aril bright orange, ca 0.5 cm long.

 

 

Distribution: Peninsular Malaysia, Java, Borneo, Philippines and Peninsular Thailand, recorded from Phangnga, Phatthalung, Satun and Yala, on hillsides in evergreen forest, 400–900 m.
