Description: Shrubby tree, 5–7 m tall, lenticellate; terminal bud resinous. Leaves opposite, elliptic, pubescent on both surfaces, 5–12 x 3–7 cm; apex acuminate; base cuneate, frequently asymmetrical; secondary nerves 8–12 pairs; petioles 1–2 cm. Stipules ca 4 mm wide, apex mucronate. Inflorescences axillary or pseudoterminal, 3–4 cm long; bracts minute, deeply lobed. Flowers 5-merous; calyx campanulate, lobes mucronate, ca 3 mm; corolla white, tube ca 0.7–1 cm long, lobes 5–8 mm long; pedicels 1–2 mm. Fruits subglobose, ca 1 cm in diam. | | | |
Distribution: Endemic to Peninsular Thailand, recorded from Krabi (Tham Suaem, Ko Phiphi), Phang Nga (Ko Panji) and Surat Thani (Khao Wong, Surat–Takuapa road). It is confined to limestone outcrops, 50–250 m.
Notes: The genus Vidalasia was separated from Gardenia based on the pollen and seed structures. It belongs to the tribe Gardenieae, and comprises of about 5 species found from N Vietnam to Myanmar, Thailand, and the Philippines. The genus name is given in honour of DrJ.E.
