Description: Solitary, deciduous palm to ca 15 m tall, 10–20 cm in diam. Leaves palmate, formimg a dense upright, rather flat crown, blade ca 70 x 100 cm, glacucous below, parted to a nearly even depth for more than half its length into ca 60 stiff, deeply folded, shortly bifid; marcescent leaves few; leafsheath fibrous, ca 30 cm long, separated into short single threads towards the apex, not forming an appendage; petioles ca 50 cm, depressedly triangular to rounded below; margins minutely toothed; adaxial hastula prominent to 3 cm long, triangular. Male inflorescences ca 25 cm long, peduncle short; propyll 2-keeled; flower globose, small, creamy; stamens 6. Female inflorescences stiff, densely branched, peduncle ca 50 cm; prophyll 2-keeled. Fruits reniform, 1–1.2 cm; epicarp and mesocarp thin.

 

Distribution: Known only from northern Thailand, distributed in exposed ridges and limestone cliffs of Doi Chiang Dao (Chiang Mai) and Doi Phuka (Nan), 1,700–2,200 m.

Notes:   It is the most cold tolerant palms in the world. The specific epithet means cloud–loving which is related to its habitats. Last updated on 15 November 2016.
