Description : Woody climber or climber; stems glabrous or glabrescent. Stipules lanceolate, ca 3 mm long, usually caducous. Leaves: petioles 7–12.5 cm long, sparsely to densely pubescent with conspicuous rusty hairs; rachis 2–3.5 cm long; stipels apicular, 3–4 mm long, caducous or persistent; petiolules 5–10 mm long, pubescent with conspicuous rusty hairs. Leaflets: upper surface sparsely pubescent, lower surface pubescent; lateral veins 5–7 pairs, not ending into the margin; terminal leaflet elliptic or ovate, apex acuminate-apiculate, base cuneate or truncate, margin entire, 8–12.5 by 5.5–8 cm; lateral leaflets ovate or ovate-elliptic, apex obtuse or acuminate-apiculate or caudate, base rounded or truncate, margin entire, 7.5–11.5 by 5.5–9 cm. Inflorescences cauliflorous or axillary, arranged in corymbose pseudoraceme or pseudoraceme, 3–8(–10) cm long; peduncles 1.5–3 cm long; bracts caducous; bracteoles caducous. Flowers 3.5–5.5 cm long; pedicels 6–15 mm long, densely pubescent with silver hairs. Calyx 4-lobed, 8–18 mm long, outside with silver hairs and irritant bristles; tube 6–9 mm long; lobes triangular, 3–5 mm long. Corolla dark purple with greenish or whitish keel; standard ovate, 2–3 by 1.5–2.5 cm, apex acute or obtuse, base auriculate, margin entire, middle part without irritant bristles, claw 3–5 mm long; wings elliptic-oblong, 4–5 cm long, apex obtuse or acute, base sagittate, margin entire with brown hairs at base, claw 4–7 mm long; keel 4–5 cm long, apex acute or acuminate, base sagittate, margin entire with brown hairs at base, claw 5–7 mm long. Stamens 4–4.5 cm long; vexillary stamen 4–4.5 cm long; staminal tube 3–3.5 cm long, glabrous; basifixed and versatile anthers bearded. Ovary sessile, 5–7 mm long, densely pubescent, 1-ovuled; style 3–4 cm long, densely pubescent at base; stigma capitate, ca 1 mm in diameter, bearded. Pods leathery, circular-elliptic, compressed, 5–6.5 by 4–5 cm; marginal wings flat, entire or entire-undulate, 4–8 mm wide; lamellae (4–)6–9, obliquely transverse, simple raised flap, usually continuous across surface of pod width, with brown hairs and irritant bristles. Seeds 1, reniform or elliptic, compressed, 2.5–3 by 2–2.5 cm, slightly rough, dull black, monochrome; hilum 5.5–6.5 cm long, circling at least or more than 50% of the seed circumference; aril absent.


Thailand : SOUTH-WESTERN: Uthai Thani (Ban Rai), Kanchanaburi (Si Sawat), Ratchaburi (Suan Phueng), Prachuap Khiri Khan (Huai Yang NP); PENINSULAR: Krabi (Lanta NP), Satun (Ko Bulon Le), Narathiwat (Hala-Bala WS).


Distribution : India (type), Sri Lanka, Myanmar.


Ecology : Along stream in evergreen and mixed deciduous forests, bamboo thickets; 80–300 m alt.


Vernacular : Tamyae yai (ตำแยใหญ่), maba lai (มะบ้าลาย), saba ling lai (สะบ้าลิงลาย), ma mui yai (หมามุ่ยใหญ่)(Geneal).
