Description : Woody climber; stems glabrescent. Stipules broadly lanceolate, 1–3 mm long, caducous. Leaves: petioles 7–12 cm long, sparsely to densely pubescent; rachis 3–4 cm long; stipels absent; petiolules 6–11 mm long, pubescent. Leaflets upper surface glabrescent or sparsely pubescent, lower surface densely pubescent; lateral veins 5–6 pairs, not ending into the margin; terminal leaflet elliptic or ovate-elliptic, apex acuminate, base cuneate or rounded, margin entire, 12–15.5 by 8–10.5 cm; lateral leaflets ovate, apex acuminate or apiculate, base rounded-cordate, margin entire, 12.5–14.5 by 8–10.5 cm. Inflorescences cauliferous, pseudoracemose, 17–35 cm long; peduncle 2–3.5 cm long; bracts ovate, 1–2 mm long; sterile bracts absent; bracteoles ovate, 2–4 mm long, caducous. Flowers 5–6.5 cm long; pedicels 12–15 mm long, densely pubescent. Calyx 4-lobed, 10–18 mm long, outside with silver hairs and irritant bristles; tube 7–10 mm long; lobes obtuse-acute, 4–7 mm long. Corolla purple or purplish white; standard whitish green or pinkish white, broadly obovate or obovate-elliptic, 3–4 by 2.5–4 cm, apex obtuse or emarginate, base cordate-auriculate, margin entire without brown hairs at base, middle part without irritant bristles, claw 5–8 mm long; wings dark purple, elliptic-oblong, 5–6 cm long, apex obtuse, base sagittate, margin entire with brown hairs at base, claw 5–8 mm long; keel pale purple or yellowish green, 5.5–7 cm long, apex acuminate or acute, base truncate-hastate, margin entire with brown hairs at base, claw 7–9 mm long. Stamens 5.5–6.5 cm long; vexillary stamen 5–6.5 cm long; staminal tube 4–5 cm long, glabrous; basifixed and versatile anthers bearded. Ovary straight, sessile, 6–10 mm long, densely pubescent, 8–10-ovuled; style 5.5–6.5 cm long, scattered pubescent; stigma capitate, ca 1 mm in diameter, bearded. Pods woody, linear-oblong, compressed, 34–48(–57) by 4–5.5 cm, with brown hairs; marginal wings, irritant bristles and lamellae absent; endocarp septate. Seeds circular-elliptic, compressed, 2.5–3.5 by 2–3 cm, smooth, dull black, monochrome; hilum 6–8 cm long, circling more than 50% of the seed circumference; aril absent.

Distribution : India, Nepal (type), Sikkim, Bhutan, Myanmar, China, Japan, Taiwan, Laos, Vietnam.
Ecology : Evergreen, dry evergreen, oak-pine and lower montain forests, along river or stream; 500–1,900 m alt.
