Description : Woody climber or climber; stems glabrous or sparsely pubescent. Stipules caducous. Leaves: petioles 4–7 cm long, sparsely pubescent with silver hairs or pale golden hairs; rachis 1.5–2.5 cm long; stipels apicular or triangular, 2–4 mm long, persistent; petiolules 4–6 mm long, pubescent with silver hairs or pale golden hairs. Leaflets: upper surface glabrous or sparsely pubescent, lower pubescent; lateral veins 5–7 pairs, not ending into the margin; terminal leaflet elliptic, apex acuminate to caudate, base rounded or cuneate, margin entire, 9.5–10.5 by 5–6 cm; lateral leaflets ovate or ovate-elliptic, apex caudate, base rounded or truncate, margin entire, 8.5–11 by 4.5–6 cm. Inflorescences cauliflorous or axillary, arranged in corymbose pseudoraceme or pseudoraceme, 13–20(–30) cm long; peduncles 5–9(–17) cm long; bracts broadly ovate or ovate-lanceolate, 2.5–6.5 by 2–3 cm, persistent, pubescent; bracteoles caducous. Flowers 6.5–7.5 cm long; pedicels 10–18 mm long, densely with silver hairs. Calyx 4-lobed, 15–23 mm long, outside with silver hairs and irritant bristles; tube 7–14 mm long; lobes triangular to linear-lanceolate, (6–)9–13 mm long. Corolla white, cream or greenish yellow; standard broadly ovate, 3–3.5 by 3–4 cm, apex obtuse, base auriculate, margin entire, middle part without irritant bristles, claw 6–8 mm long; wings obovate, 5–6 cm long, apex obtuse, base cuneate, margin entire, claw 3–5 mm long; keel 5–6 cm long, apex acute or acuminate, base rounded, margin entire, claw 4–6 mm long. Stamens 4.5–6 cm long; vexillary stamen 4.5–6 cm long; staminal tube 3.5–5 cm long, glabrous; basifixed and versatile anthers bearded. Ovary straight, sessile, 5–9 mm long, densely pubescent, 2–3-ovuled; style 3.5–5 cm long, densely pubescent at base; stigma capitate, ca 1 mm in diameter, bearded. Pods leathery, reniform or oblong-reniform, compressed, 9–15 by 6–7.5 cm; marginal wings flat, entire-undulate, 12–25 mm wide; lamellae 14–19, obliquely transverse, bifurcated and interrupted along middle line of pod width, with silver hairs and irritant bristles; endocarp septate. Seeds (2–)3, circular-elliptic, compressed, 2.5–3 by 2–2.5 cm, smooth, brown or orange-brown with mottling or monochrome; hilum 5–5.5 cm long, circling more than 50% of the seed circumference; aril absent.


Thailand : NORTHERN: Mae Hong Son (Tham Pla), Chiang Mai (Doi Chiang Dao WS, Fang, Mae Rim, Mae Taeng); Chiang Rai (Khun Nam Nang Non), Nan (Tham Sakoen NP), Lampang (Chae Son NP, Doi Khun Tan NP, Doi Luang NP, Ngao); EASTERN: Nakhon Ratchasima (Pak Thong Chai), Ubon Ratchathani (Khueang Nai); SOUTH-WESTERN: Prachuap Khiri Khan (Kui Buri NP); CENTRAL: Saraburi (Muak Lek – type of Mucuna nigricans var. cordata: Noe 125, lectotype designated here, isolectotyes -ABD BK TCD; Namtok Samlan NP).


Distribution : Myanmar, China, Japan, Laos, Cambodia (type), Vietnam.


Ecology : Dry evergreen, mixed evergreen and deciduous forests, dipterocarp forest, along stream in disturbed forest or secondary forest with bamboo, limestone mountain, open thickets; 75–800 m alt.


Vernacular : Ma mui (หมามุ่ย), khruea ba lai (เครือบ้าลาย).
