Description : Annual herb; stems erect, 30–100 cm tall, sparsely pilose. Stipules linear or lanceolate, 5–8 by 1–1.5 mm, apex acuminate, base truncate, outside sparsely pilose, inside glabrous. Leaves: petioles 1.2–5 cm long, pilose; rachis 0.5–1.5 cm long, pilose. Leaflets lanceolate, ovate-lanceolate, ovate, narrowly elliptic or oblong, 1.2–7 by 0.4–3 cm, not lobed, apex acute, obtuse or rounded and apiculate, base cuneate, attenuate or obtuse, margin entire, upper surface glabrescent or slightly pilose along viens, lower surface pilose; lateral veins 6–9 pairs; stipels subulate, 2–3 mm long, apex acute, base truncate, outside sparsely pilose, inside glabrous; petiolules 1.5–3 mm long, densely pilose. Inflorescences 5–18- fascicled; peduncle 14–28 cm long, sparsely to densely pilose; axis 3–10 cm long, densely pilose; inflorescence bracts linear, 4–5 by ca 0.5 mm, apex acuminate, base truncate, outside pilose, inside glabrous; fascicled bracts linear, 4.5–6.5 by ca 0.5 mm, apex acuminate, base truncate, outside pilose, inside glabrous. Flowers 2 in each fascicle, red, dark red or brownish red, rarely pink; pedicels 1–2 mm long, densely pilose; bracteoles linear, 3–3.5 by 0.5–1 mm, apex acuminate, base truncate, outside pilose, inside glabrous. Calyx: tube 4–5 by 2–3 mm; two upper lobes deltoid, ca 1.5 by 1.5 mm, apex acute; three lower lobes subtriangular, ca 2 by 1 mm, apex acute, outside pilose, inside glabrous. Corolla: standard cream or pale green, obovate, 1.4–1.7 by 0.8–1.2 cm, apex emarginate, base with 2 small auricles, ca 1 mm long, claw 5–5.5 mm long; wings red, dark red, brownish red or pink, obovate, 2.2–2.6 by 0.8–1.3 cm (excluding claw 1.4–1.7 cm long), apex rounded, claw 8–9 mm long, margin undulate; keel yellowish green, oblong, 1.8–2.2 by 0.2–0.3 cm (excluding claw 1.1–1.3 cm long), apex truncate, claw 7–9 mm long. Stamens: filaments white, 1.4–1.6 cm long; anthers yellow, oblong, ca 1 mm long. Pistil 1.7–2 cm long; ovary linear, pubescent; stigma capitate. Pods linear, 6–10 by 0.3–0.4 cm, apical beak 0.3–0.5 cm long, base shortly stipitate, sparsely to densely pubescent; infructescence stalk 18–46 cm, sparsely pilose; fruit stalk 1.5–3 mm long, pilose. Seeds 15–24, brown, dark brown, red-brown, light brown, sometimes with dark brown or black dots, oblong, 2–3 by 1.5–2 mm.

Distribution : Native to tropical America (Jamaica – type); widely cultivated and naturalized throughout the tropics and subtropics.
Ecology : Cultivated and usually naturalized throughout the country in open areas, roadsides, disturbed areas, agricultural fields or watersides; 0–500 m alt. Flowering and fruiting throughout the year.
Vernacular : Thua phi (ถั่วผี)(Bangkok).
CommonName : Phasey bean.
Uses: For cover crop, forage or soil fertility.
