Description : Tree up to 20 m tall, evergreen; trunk and branches with prickles; bark smooth, with large pustular lenticels, brownish grey or brown. Stipules triangular to lanceolate, 5–8 mm long, caducous. Leaves glabrous, coriaceous; petioles 5–12 cm long without prickles; rachis 3–5 cm long. Leaflets: terminal leaflet elliptic or ovate, 7–15 by 4–12 cm, apex acute, base obtuse to cuneate, margin entire; lateral veins 7–9 pairs; lateral leaflets similar but smaller than the terminal leaflet; petiolules 7–10 mm long; stipels glandular, tiny, rounded. Inflorescences terminal or pseudo-terminal from branchlets, horizontal, 7.5–26 cm long; bracts ovate, 2–3 mm long, pubescent, caducous. Flowers 8–30, sub-secund, usually with 3 flowers per fascicle; pedicels 2–16 mm long, pubescent; bracteoles 2, ovate, 2–3 mm long. Calyx campanulate, 12–16 by 4–10 mm; tube 3–6 mm long; lobes 3, obovate, 5 by 7–10 mm, middle lobe apex apiculate, lateral lobe apex obtuse, pubescent. Corolla scarlet, yellow to orange; standard suborbicular, broadly rounded, 3.8–5.2 by 2.5–3 cm, apex obtuse, claw 13–15 mm long; wings oblanceolate to oblong, 18–22 mm long; keel obliquely ovate-falcate, connate at middle part, 20–27 mm long, at least half as long as standard, apex obtuse. Stamens 3.3–4 cm long, glabrous. Ovary pubescent; style slightly ascending, glabrescent. Pods torulose, constricted between seeds, 11–20 by 1.2–1.5 cm, apex acuminate, woody, straight to slightly curved when mature. Seeds 3–12, ellipsoidal, 1.2–1.8 cm long, dark brown.
Thailand : NORTHERN: Chiang Mai; CENTRAL: Ang Thong, Nonthaburi (Pak Kret, Bang Kraso), Krung Thep Maha Nakhon (Bangkok) (Khlong San); SOUTH-WESTERN: Kanchanaburi (Sangkhla Buri); SOUTH-EASTERN: Chanthaburi (Ma Kham); PENINSULAR: Surat Thani, Phatthalung, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Satun (La ngu).
Distribution : India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam (type), Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, New Guinea.
Ecology : Often found near stream, swamp and seashores in orchard or in lowland evergreen forest; 0–500 m alt. Flowering: January–February; fruiting: March–April.
Vernacular : Thong lang nam (ทองหลางน้ำ)(Central); thong lang ban (ทองหลางบ้าน)(Bangkok); thong lang bai mon (ทองหลางใบมน), thong long (ทองโหลง)(Central).
Uses: Young leaves are consumed as a vegetable.
