Description : Herbaceous climber, prostrate; stems terete, sparsely hairy to glabrous. Stipules lanceolate, 3–4 by 1.5–2 mm, apex acute, base oblique, margin entire, outside densely hairy, inside glabrous. Leaves alternate; petioles 5–12 cm long, sparsely hairy to subglabrous, pulvinus densely covered by very short hairs; rachis 2–4(–6) cm long, rather densely hairy. Leaflets: petiolules 3–8 mm long, densely hairy; blade subcoriaceous, usually undulate, thinner when dry, oblovate, broadly obovate, broadly elliptic or suborbicular, 5–10 by 3.5–10 cm, apex rounded or retuse, base cuneate, margin entire, both surfaces sparsely to densely hairy; lateral veins 6–8 pairs; stipels subulate, 0.5–2.5 mm long, stiff, persistent. Inflorescences erect, 15–40 cm long with 6–17 swollen nodes; peduncles 12–27 cm long, glabrescent to glabrous; axis 5–22 cm long, sparsely to densely hairy. Flowers purple, mildly fragrant; pedicels 3–7 mm long; bracteoles broadly ovate, small, caducous. Calyx light green, 1–1.6 cm long, sparsely to densely hairy; tube 0.8–1.2 cm long, 6–8 mm in diameter; upper lip 2-lobed, lobes semicircular, 3.5–5 by 4.5–7 mm; lower lip 3-lobed, lobes triangular, 1–3 by 2–3 mm. Corolla: standard obcordate, 2.3–3 by 1.7–2.5 cm, apex cleft, base clawed, 2–3 mm long, margin revolute; wings free, ligulate 2–2.4 by 0.5–0.6 cm, curved, apex rounded, base clawed, 4.5–5.5 mm long, margin entire, undulate; keel boat-shaped, 2.2–2.6 by 0.6–0.7 cm, apex rounded to obtuse, base free, clawed, 6–7 mm long. Stamens: filaments 2.5–3 cm long; anthers 2–3 by 1–1.5 mm. Ovary oblong, 0.7–1 cm long, laterally compressed, densely hairy, base stipitate, 1.5–2 mm long; style 1–1.4 cm long, proximal portion densely hairy, distal portion glabrescent; stigma capitate, glabrous; disc annular, 2–3 mm in diameter. Pods 6–9-seeded, narrowly oblong, 6–12(–14) by 2–3.5 cm, 1–2 cm thick, straight or slightly curved, turgid, green turning yellowish white with age, additional ribs 1–3 mm away from the ventral suture, tip beaked, 1–4 mm long, base stipitate, 0.6–0.8(–1.2) cm long, valves leathery, twisting upon dehiscence; exocarp smooth, glabrescent to glabrous; fruit stalk 0.6–1.2 mm long, thick. Seeds ellipsoid, 1.3–1.6 by 0.7–1 cm, 0.6–0.9 cm thick, slightly laterally compressed, brown to dark brown, sometimes with dark brown marbling, glabrous; hilum linear, 6–8.5 mm long.

Distribution : Pantropical including Pacific Islands, and subtropics (E Brazil, S Africa, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Ryukyu Islands, SE Australia).


Ecology : Open coastal area, usually on sandy beach, sometimes along the edge of mangrove forest, at sea level. Flowering and fruiting: August–December.


Vernacular : Kai tia (ไก่เตี้ย), kam phra (กำพร้า), thua kam phra (ถั่วกำพร้า), thua khla (ถั่วคล้า), thua phra (ถั่วพร้า).


CommonName : Beach bean.
