Description : Rhizomatous herb 0.8–1.2 m tall, stems solitary; rhizome long, cylindrical, rarely branched. Leaf sheaths green; ligule bilobed, lobes 7–9 by 3–4 mm; blades 13–15, lanceolate, 26–28 by 4.7–5.1 cm, base cuneate, apex acuminate; petiole light green, 4–6 mm long, unequal. Inflorescences 1–3, radical, borne on rhizome with procumbent peduncle, loosely capitate, flowers opening 1–3 at a time; peduncle short, 1.5–5 cm; spike ca 5 by 1.5–1.7 cm, floral bracts 7–9; bracts brownish red, 3.2–3.5 by 0.5–0.7 cm, pubescent; bracteoles 2.5–2.6 by 0.8 cm, pubescent. Flower yellow; ovary ca 5 by 2 mm, pubescent; calyx ca 1 cm long, tube 6–7 mm long, lobes 3–5 mm long, apex truncate, pubescent; floral tube 3.2–3.5 cm long, yellow, dorsal corolla lobe 2.3–2.5 by 0.8–0.9 cm, lateral corolla lobes ca 2.2 by 0.5 cm; labellum ca 1.5 by 1 cm, midlobe yellow with dark red mottling, elliptic, 1.1–1.4 by ca 0.9 cm, apex obtuse, side lobes yellow in lower half, upper half reddish mottled, rounded, 3.5–5 by 3.5–5 mm, apex acute or obtuse; stamen: filament short; anther yellow, 1.3–1.4 by ca 0.3 cm, anther crest yellow to dark red distally, 1.6–1.8 cm long. Fruit faintly pinkish brown; inner wall of pericarp dark red, glossy, ellipsoid; seeds black, aril white.
Thailand : NORTHERN: Mae Hong Son (Pang Mapha), Chiang Mai (Chiang Dao, Doi Angka, Doi Inthanon, Doi Suthep – type: Kerr 1311A, lectotype -K, isolectotypes -BK BM E), Omkoi), Chiang Rai (Doi Luang NP), Phayao (Phu Langka), Nan (Doi Phu Kha, Tham Sakoen NP); NORTH-EASTERN: Phetchabun (Phu Hin Rong Kla, Phu Phachit), Loei (Phu Luang); EASTERN: Nakhon Ratchasima (Khao Yai).
Distribution : China (Yunnan – type of Zingiber teres), Laos.
Ecology : Montane to hill evergreen and pine forests, 800–1,700 m alt. Flowering: June–July; fruiting: July–September.
Vernacular : Hua kambit (หัวกำ บิด).
