Description : Rhizomatous herb 1.4–1.7 m tall; rhizome mildly fragrant. Leaf sheaths green; ligule bilobed, lobes ca 5 cm long, light brown; blades 13–18, lanceolate or elliptic, 40–60 by 10–16 cm, base attenuate or cuneate on distal leaves, apex acuminate; petiole green or yellowish green, swollen, 5–7 mm long. Inflorescences 1–2, arising from rhizome; peduncle 2–4 cm long; spike subglobose or turbinate, capitulate, 7–9 by 3.5–5 cm, apex truncate; bracts oblong, ca 3.5 by 0.9 cm, cream or light brown, pubescent; bracteoles ca 3.2 cm long, pubescent, apex tridentate. Flower: ovary unknown; calyx 1.8–2 cm long, pubescent, lobes ca 1 cm; floral tube ca 3.3 cm long, cream, pilose, dorsal corolla lobe 2.1–2.3 by 0.6–0.7 cm, lateral corolla lobes 2–2.1 by 0.4–0.5 cm; labellum cream at base, brown-purple striate along margin, midlobe oblong, ca 1.1 by 0.7 cm, apex truncate, side lobes ca 0.8 by 0.6 cm; stamen: filament unknown; anther ca 1 cm long, cream, orange on back, anther crest ca 1 cm long, cream or with violet dots. Fruit unknown.
Thailand : NORTHERN: Mae Hong Son (Pai, Pang Mapha); SOUTH-WESTERN: Phetchaburi.
Distribution : China (Yunnan – type), Myanmar.
Ecology : Evergreen and mixed bamboo-deciduous forests, 700–1,400 m alt. Flowering: late June–August.
Vernacular : Khing dok lai (ขิงดอกลาย).
Notes: Zingiber flavomaculosum is quite distinct in possessing darkish brown and divided ligule lobes and a strongly attenuate leaf base.
