Description : Tree up to 20 m tall, bark smooth, greyish brown. Twigs puberulous when young and eventually glabrate, with conspicuous lenticels. Leaves thinly coriaceous, slightly asymmetrically obovate, oblanceolate or elliptic, (20–)23‒32 by (6.5–)9.5‒11(‒14) cm, base obtuse or cuneate, apex acuminate, the acumen 8–15 mm long, glabrous on both surfaces except for sparse hairs along the veins, midrib shallowly grooved above, secondary veins fairly straight, 14‒16(‒18) per side, tertiary venation percurrent; petioles 5‒8(‒10) mm long, flat above. Inflorescences in axils of leafy twigs, 1–2(–4)-flowered, peduncle 4–7 mm long, rachis present, pedicels (15–)20‒25 mm long, 2‒2.2 thick, appressed pale brown-pubescent, each bearing an adnate ovate bract 3‒4 by 2.5‒3.5 mm at the base; buds ovoid. Sepals imbricate, coriaceous, ovate, 7‒9 by 8‒10 mm, apex acute, wrinkled and tomentose outside. Petals valvate from base to apices, erect, greyish white, obovate, base with short claw ca 2 mm long, apex acute, appressed pale brown-pubescent on both sides, margin with a straight edge 1 mm thick; outer petals 35‒45(–50) by 15‒18(–23) mm; inner petals 35‒45(–50) by 13–16(–18) mm. Stamens oblong, 2.5–3 mm long, anther connective apex slightly convex. Carpels oblong, 3.5–4 mm long, stigmas higher than anther connective apices, clavate, 1.8–2 mm long, hairy. Receptacle conical with a slightly concave apex, 4–6 mm in diam., 2‒2.5 mm thick, pubescent. Fruit of up to 15 monocarps borne on a pedicel 30‒35 mm long, 3–4 mm thick. Monocarps green to yellowish green when mature, oblongoid, 3.5‒4 by 1.6‒2 cm, appressed-pubescent, apex beaked, the beak 3.5–4.5 mm long, 1.5‒1.8 mm thick, base rounded, stipe 6‒8 mm long, 1.5‒2 mm thick; pericarp ca 1 mm thick. Seeds oblongoid, 30‒35 by 14‒17 mm, brown, smooth, often shiny.

Distribution : Peninsular Malaysia (type).
Ecology : Tropical rain forests, 50–500 m alt. Flowering: August‒March; fruiting: December–April.
Vernacular : Bulan bala (บุหลันบาลา).
Notes: The specimen Kerr 7668 -BK from Yala Province (Betong), identified by Sinclair (1955) as Enicosanthum (now Monoon) congregatum (King) Airy Shaw, is similar but has inflorescences borne on the trunk and a more pronounced beak 6‒8 mm long on the monocarps.
