Description : Tree to 15 m tall. Young branches glabrous to hairy. Leaves papyraceous to subcoriaceous, (oblong- to obovate-)elliptic, 14.5–25.5 by 4.5–8 cm, ± matt to ± glossy above, glabrous to sparsely hairy below, glabrous above, secondary veins 11–16 pairs, ± plane to slightly prominent above; tertiary venation (weakly) reticulate, indistinct to ± distinct; petioles 4.5–11.5 mm long. Flowers solitary, on branches, pedicels 6–11.5 mm long. Sepals 3.5–10 by 3–6.5 mm, reflexed, venation indistinct. Outer petals cream-yellow, 26–70 by 10–25 mm, glabrous to hairy ab- and adaxially with glabrous basal region facing apertures between inner petals, venation indistinct. Inner petals cream-yellow, 10–19 by 2.5–9.5 mm, sparsely to densely hairy abaxially, glabrous basally and granular apically adaxially. Stamens 115–185, anther connective apex long-apiculate. Carpels 15–40, ovaries densely hairy; stigmas funnel-shaped or subulate, glabrous or sparsely hairy, often warty. Fruits without persistent sepals, pedicels 4–16 mm long. Monocarps (dark) red, subglobose to ellipsoid, 1–1.4 by 0.7–1.1 cm, ± smooth, glabrous to sparsely hairy, stipe to 6 mm long. Seeds solitary, 9–12 by 7–9 mm, smooth to slightly rugose, subglabrous to hairy.

Thailand : PENINSULAR: Phuket, Trang, Songkhla, Narathiwat.

Distribution : Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, Sumatra (type).

Ecology : Primary lowland rain forests, sea level to 900 m alt. Flowering and fruiting throughout the year.

Vernacular : Bu nga lam chiak (บุหงาลำเจียก)(Narathiwat).

Notes: Previous authors have commented on the superficial similarity between Goniothalamus tapis and G. malayanus. Although the leaves are similar, the two species can easily be distinguished if flowering material is available, as G. tapis stamens have a long apiculate connective, whereas those of G. malayanus are truncate. In addition, G. tapis monocarps are smaller than those of G. malayanus, and invariably contain only one seed each.
