Description : Tree to 5 m tall. Young branches sparsely hairy. Leaves chartaceous, elliptic to oblong, 12.5–17 by 3.5–5.5 cm, base slightly cordate, apex acuminate, glabrous on both surfaces, glaucous below; midrib glabrous above, sparsely hairy below, secondary veins 8–14 pairs, plane or impressed above; petioles 5–7.5 mm long, sparsely hairy. Flowers on young growth, pedicels 46–48 mm long, sparsely hairy. Sepals 2–4 by 2.5–3 mm. Petals yellow, ovate with broadly acute or obtuse apex, 16–30 by 11–15 mm, length/width ratio 1.5–2.1, not twisted, chartaceous, glabrous adaxially, sparsely to densely hairy abaxially; floral chamber ca 6 mm long (20–40% of petal length). Stamens ca 130, anther connective apex truncate; pollen echinate. Carpels ca 11, stigmas sparsely hairy apically. Fruit pedicels 22–63 mm long, sparsely hairy. Monocarps 9–14, red, 2.5–6.5 by 0.65–0.75 cm, ellipsoid (1-seeded) or moniliform (≥ 2-seeded), sparsely hairy; constriction 2–2.5 mm wide (25–35% of monocarp width), stipe 6.5–9.5 mm long, sparsely hairy. Seeds 1–4, 13–16 by 6–7 mm, length/width ratio 1.8–2.5, ellipsoid.
Thailand : NORTHERN: Chiang Rai (Doi Tung – type of Dasymaschalon obtusipetalum Jing Wang, Chalermglin & R.M.K. Saunders: Pooma 487, holotype -BKF).
Distribution : China (Yunnan – type).
Ecology : Montane forests over limestone, 800–1,400 m alt. Flowering: May–June (based on sparse data); fruiting: February, March, May and November (based on sparse data).
Vernacular : Burong dok thu (บุหรงดอกทู่).
