Description : Climber to 20 m tall, sometimes with thorns. Twigs densely erect-pubescent, becoming glabrous, outer layer non-flaking. Leaves coriaceous, broad-elliptic to oblong-elliptic, 5.7–19 by 3–8.5 cm, base cuneate to rounded, apex acuminate to acute, subglabrous above, sparsely to densely erect-pubescent below, secondary veins 6–11 per side, tertiary venation reticulate; petioles 3–10 mm long. Inflorescences 1–3-flowered, distal branches arising from peduncular hook short, pedicels 12–24 mm long, sparsely to densely erect-pubescent. Sepals ovate, 5–7 by 4–5 mm, apex acute, sparsely to densely puberulent on both surfaces. Petals yellow in vivo, subglabrous to puberulent, blades laminar. Outer petals 28–32 mm long, 5–6 mm wide at base, 5–13 mm wide at midpoint, blades lanceolate, apex acute to obtuse. Inner petals 25–30 mm long, 4–5 mm wide at base, 4–10 mm wide at midpoint, blades lanceolate, apex acute to obtuse. Stamens 2.5–3 mm long, anther connective apex apiculate. Carpels 25–29, 3–3.5 mm long. Fruit of up to 22 monocarps borne on a sparsely erect-pubescent pedicel 16–30 mm long. Monocarps drying brown-black, obovoid, 2.5–3 by 1.5–2 cm, smooth, glabrous, apex with a beak ca 1 mm long, base contracted into a stipe 3–5 mm long. Seeds dark brown, 18–21 by 12–16 mm, rough.


Thailand : NORTHERN: Chiang Mai, Lampang (Pang Pue, type of Artabotrys vanprukii Craib, Kerr 4833, lectotype -K), Phrae, Tak, Kamphaeng Phet; NORTH-EASTERN: Phetchabun, Loei, Khon Kaen; EASTERN: Chaiyaphum, Nakhon Ratchasima; SOUTH-WESTERN: Uthai Thani, Kanchanaburi (“prope Kanboerie” – type: Teijsmann s.n., [Herb. Bogor. no. 5973], lectotype -U, isolectotype -KFTA), Ratchaburi, Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan.


Distribution : Endemic.


Ecology : Dry/mixed deciduous forests and seasonal evergreen forests, 50–800 m alt. Flowering: January–April; fruiting: March–August.


Vernacular : Karawek (การะเวก)(Central); nom chani (นมชะนี)(Prachuap Khiri Khan); kradang ngua (กระดังงัว), kradang nga pa (กระดังงาป่า)(Ratchaburi); kradang nga thao (กระดังงาเถา)(Peninsular); nam khwai non (หนามควายนอน)(Chon Buri); tin tang (ตีนตั่ง, ตีนต้าง)(Loei); saban nga khruea (สะบันงาเครือ)(Northern).


Notes: Artabotrys siamensis is characterised by erect-pubescent young twigs and lower surface of mature leaves, coriaceous leaves and 25–29 carpels per flower.
