Description : Climbers to 25 m long; stems quadrangular, sparsely to densely, densely brown hairy. Stipules deeply bifid, lobes narrowly triangular, 4–5 mm long, acute, pubescent. Leaves elliptic, lanceolate, elliptic-lanceolate, or ovate-lanceolate, 6–10 by 2.5–4 cm, base rounded, apex acuminate or caudate, sparsely short hairy on blade, more densely hairs on midrib above, densely hairy along veins beneath, blade drying papery; lateral veins 6–8 pairs, with hairy domatia in lateral vein axils; petiole 3–6 mm long, densely hairy. Inflorescences solitary, axillary and sometimes terminal, densely hairs; peduncles 2.5–3 cm long, at articulation with narrowly triangular bracts, 2–3 mm long. Flowering heads across calyces 0.7–1 cm diam., across corolla 2.5–3 cm diam. Flowers greenish yellow; sessile. Calyx with hypanthium portion obconic, ca 1.2 mm long; lobes linear to narrowly triangular, 0.7–1 by 0.5 mm, acute, densely hairy. Corolla tube 5–8.5 by ca 1 mm, outside densely hairy; lobes ligulate to elliptic-oblong, ca 1.2 by 0.7 mm, obtuse to rounded. Fruiting heads 1.5–2 cm diam. Capsule sessile, obovoid, ca 4 by 2 mm, pale hairy. Seeds 2–3 by ca 1 mm.


Thailand : Lampang, Nan (Phu Huat – type of Uncaria quadrangularis: Kerr 4995 -BM K L), Phetchabun (Phu Miang); EASTERN: Nakhon Ratchasima (Khao Yai NP), Chaiyaphum (Khao Saming, Nam Phrom); SOUTH-WESTERN: Uthai Thani (Huai Kha Khaeng); SOUTH-EASTERN: Chon Buri (Si Racha), Trat (Khao Kuap); PENINSULAR Prachuap Khiri Khan (Bang Saphan), Yala (Thanto Falls).


Distribution : India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Indochina, China, Malay Peninsula, Sumatra (type).


Ecology : Evergreen and dry evergreen forests, 200–1,300 m alt. Flowering and fruiting all year round.


Vernacular : Kiao so (เกียวโซ้)(Pattani); khao khwai mae lup (เขาควายแม่ลูบ)(Lampang); khao khwai mae wong (เขาควายแม่ว้อง), ngop (งอบ), i ngop (อีงอบ)(Prachuap Khiri Khan).
