Description : Herbs, 20–50 cm tall; stems erect, quadrangular, 4-ribbed, glabrous or sparsely papillate at nodes. Stipules truncate, lobes as 2–6 fiiliform appendages, tips with colleters. Leaves linear, 10–30 by 1–3 mm, apex acute, base cuneate, chartaceous, glabrous or papillae at margin and midrib below, lateral veins inconspicuous; petiole absent. Flowers terminal and axillary or axillary only, solitary, mostly in pairs and opposite at nodes, white, cylindrical; homostylous; pedicels filiform, 1–2.2 cm long, glabrous. Calyx lobes deltoid, 0.8–1 by 0.4–0.6 mm, apex acute, margin papillate, sinus with 2–3 colleters. Corolla tube 2.5–3 mm long; lobes ovate-lanceolate, 1–1.5 by 0.5–0.8 mm, apex acute, glabrous. Filaments ca 0.2 mm long, glabrous; anthers oblong, ca 0.5 mm long. Ovary glabrous; style ca 2.5 mm long, glabrous; stigma 0.3–0.5 mm long. Capsules obovate, 2.5–3 by 2–2.5 mm, glabrous, beak protruding over persistent calyx. Seeds 25–45 per locule, concave triangular-ellipsoid, 0.3–0.4 by 0.2–0.3 mm, reticulate.


Thailand : PENINSULAR: Ranong (Khao Ya), Phangnga (Kura Buri, Thai Mueang Beach), Phuket (Khao Phra Thaeo WS, Nai Han Beach).


Distribution : Tropical Africa and the Indian subcontinent (Sri Lanka – type), India, Bangladesh, naturalized in Indochina and W Malesia.


Ecology : Seashores, grass fields, open places, 0–400 m alt. Flowering: October–May.


Vernacular : Ya riao (หญ้าเรียว).
