Description : Annual herbs, erect or procumbent; stems 5–40 cm tall, quadrangular, 4-ribbed, slightly scabrid below nodes. Stipules sheath membranous, truncate to triangular, lobes as 2–3 filiform appendages, 2–3 colleters, yellowish brown. Leaves narrowly elliptic or narrowly oblong, 7–25 by 0.5–6 mm, apex acute, base acute, muricate near margin above, midrib slightly muricate beneath, lateral veins obscure; subsessile. Inflorescences axillary, dichotomous cymes, pseudo-umbellate, flowers 2–5 or solitary; peduncle 0.5–2 cm long. Flowers white, tubular; homostylous; pedicels 2–8 mm long, glabrous to slightly scabrid. Calyx lobes deltoid, 0.3–1 by up to 0.5 mm, margin muricate. Corolla tube 1–1.5 mm long, lobes ovate-deltoid, 0.8–1 by ca 0.5 mm, outside glabrous, inside with a row of hairs at mouth of corolla tube. Stamens inserted, adnate at middle of tube, filaments 0.5 mm long, glabrous; anthers ovate, 0.8–1 mm long. Ovary glabrous; style inserted, 0.5–1 mm long, glabrous; stigma reaching anther position, short, rounded. Capsules opening at top, oblate, 1.5–2.5 by 2–3 mm, not protruding above calyx. Seeds 25–40 per locule, angular, 0.2–0.3 by 0.1–0.2 mm, reticulate.

Distribution : Tropics and subtropics of Africa and Asia, from W Africa to New Guinea, China, widely introduced in the Americas (type from the West Indies) and the Pacific region.


Ecology : Weed in open places, to 1,100 m alt. Flowering throughout the year.


Vernacular : Ya lin ngu (หญ้าลิ้นงู)(Bangkok).
