Description : Annual or perennial herbs 10–35 cm tall; stems erect or ascending, subsucculent, branchlets acute quadrangular or winged, glabrous. Stipules sheath truncate to triangular, 3–5 short filiform appendages, hairy. Leaves elliptic, ovate, or rounded, 1–7 by 7–2.5 cm, base acuminate, attenuate, apex acute, acuminate or mucronulate, margin muricate, glabrous, membranous, lateral veins 2–5 pairs, inconspicuous; petiole 3–15 mm long. Inflorescences umbellate with 2–8 flowers or flowers solitary; peduncle 3–30 mm long. Flowers white; homostylous; pedicel 1–8 mm long, winged. Calyx tube distinct; lobes narrowly deltoid, 0.5–1 by 0.5–1 mm, apex acute, erect, margin muricate. Corolla tube 1–1.5 mm long; lobes 1.5–2 by 1–1.5 mm, acute, muriculate at apex, outside glabrous, inside hairy at mouth of corolla tube. Stamens included under a row of hair, ca 0.5 mm long; anther yellowish white, rounded, 0.3–0.5 mm in diameter. Style swollen at base, 0.3–0.5 mm long; stigma inconspicuous. Ovary glabrous, 4-wing-ribbed. Capsules obovoid or cup-shaped, widest at upper end, 3–7 by 2.5–5 mm, distincty winged; persistent calyx tube conspicuous. Seeds 40–80 per locule, 0.5–0.6 by 0.4–0.5 mm.

Distribution : India (Madras – type of Hedyotis alata), Myanmar, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia (Java – type), the Philippines.
Ecology : Open places, rice fields, 0–200 m alt. Flowering and fruiting throughout the year.
Vernacular : Ya phong phot khao (หญ้าพงพดเขา)(Prachin Buri); ya khan phong (หญ้าคันพอง)(Khon Kaen).
Notes: Leptopetalum pteritum resembles L. biflorum in seed characteristics but differs in having winged capsules and a conspicuously persistent calyx tube.
