Description : Ascending or erect herbs; stems 30–45 cm tall, quadrangular, glabrous. Stipules adnate with petiole, sheath deltoid, lobes with 3–5 filiform appendages. Leaves opposite decussate, ovate or lanceolate, 1.8–7 by 1–3.8 cm, apex acute, base cuneate or attenuate, sparsely hispidulous above, glabrous beneath, lateral veins 3–4(–6) pairs, grooved above, conspicuous beneath; petiole (0–)1.5 cm long. Inflorescences terminal and axillary, densely capitate. Flowers violet; infundibulariform; heterostylous; sessile. Calyx tube 0.5–1 mm long; lobes deltoid, 1–2 mm long, apex acute, recurved. Corolla tube 3–3.5 mm long; lobes ovate-lanceolate, 1.5–2 mm long, apex acute, inside tube pubescent between middle tube and middle lobe. Stamens white. Ovary glabrous. Longistylous flowers: filaments adnate in tube, ca 0.2 mm long; anthers oblong, 0.5–0.7 mm long; style 4–4.5 mm long, pubescent; stigma ca 0.5 mm long. Brevistylous flowers: filaments adnate at petal sinuses, ca 0.2 mm long; anthers oblong, 0.8–1 mm long; style 1–1.5 mm long; stigma ca 1 mm long. Capsules indehiscent or septicidally dehiscent, ovoid, 2.5–3 by 2–2.5 mm, glabrous. Seeds 19–31 per locule, 0.6–0.7 by 0.4–0.5 mm.
Thailand : NORTHERN: Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai (Doi Pui, Doi Chiang Dao, Doi Inthanon, Doi Hua Sua); Lamphun (Doi Khun Tan NP).
Distribution : India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Vietnam, China (type), Taiwan.
Ecology : Evergreen hill forests, pine-oak forests, 550–2,000 m alt. Flowering: October–February.
Vernacular : Ya hua chuk (หญ้าหัวจุก)(Bangkok); ya hau khon yai (หญ้าหัวขนใหญ่).
