Description : Climbers; branches 4-obtusely angular or terete, densely reddish brown or yellow villous or hirsute. Stipules fused along one side and forming acute or truncate sheath, membranous, 6–8 mm long, pilose or hirsute. Leaves elliptic, elliptic-oblong, ovate-lanceolate or lanceolate, 5–14 by 3–7 cm, base cuneate, obtuse, rounded, slightly oblique or sometimes cordulate, margin entire, slightly undulate, chartaceous, sparsely villous above, densely villous beneath, apex caudate-acuminate or shortly acuminate, drying dark brown, midrib sunken near base, raised in the upper part, villous above, prominent beneath, densely villous, lateral veins 8–12 pairs, loops forming near apex, densely hairy beneath; petiole subterete, 5–10(–15) mm long, densely brownish or yellowish villous. Inflorescences terminal, pseudo-umbellate, with 5–10 flowering heads; each head subglobose, 5–6 cm in diam., with 5–15 flowers; peduncle 1–3 cm long, densely villous. Flowers 4–5-merous. Calyx 1–1.5 mm long, partially fused, with rounded to obtuse lobes, villous or puberulent. Corolla greenish white, salverform, puberulent outside; tube ca 1 mm long, hairy in throat; lobes narrowly oblong 2–3 mm long. Stamens slightly exserted. Style thin, ca 4 mm long; stigma lobes globose. Infructescences pseudo-umbellate, subglobose, 1.2–1.5 cm in diam., orange.


Thailand : CENTRAL: Saraburi (Sam Lan); PENINSULAR: Chumphon (Lang Suan, Tung Luang), Satun (Khao Keo Range – type of Morinda cinnamomea: Kerr 14551 -BK BM K KYO).


Distribution : India (type), Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, China.


Ecology : In dry evergreen, evergreen forests, 0–700 m alt. Flowering: March–April; fruiting: April–May.


Vernacular : Phan samo khon (พันสมอขน).
