Description : Tree to 8 m tall; twigs greyish. Stipules lanceolate, early caducous. Leaves 3–9 cm long; petioles ca 3 cm long; rachis 10–20 cm long, glabrous to glabrescent. Leaflets 3(–5), broadly elliptic, 4–15 by 2–9 cm, terminal one larger than the others, apex obtuse, slightly emarginate, base rounded, upper surface glabrous, lower surface with adpressed hairs; midrib flat or impressed above, lateral veins 8–12 pairs; petiolules 3–5 mm long, glabrous to puberulous. Inflorescences in upper leaf axils and terminal, short racemes, 5–10 cm long; few flowered; bracts and bracteoles early caducous; pedicels 2–3 mm long. Calyx ca 5 mm long; teeth deltoid, minute. Corolla yellow to orangish yellow; standard not longer than the calyx. Stamens diadelphous, in 2 lateral bundles of 5 each. Ovary hairy; ovules 3–4. Pods broadly elliptic to orbicular, 6–9 cm long, 3–5 cm in diam., silky hairs when young, 1–2-seeded. Seeds oblong-reniform, ca 6 by 3 mm, brown to dark brown.


Thailand : Cultivated.


Distribution : Sri Lanka, India (type), Bangladesh.


Vernacular : Chan daeng (จันทน์แดง), rak ta chan (รักตจันทน์)(Central).
