Description : Shrubby climber 40–50 cm tall. Stem green, cylindrical to slightly angulose, to 8 mm in diam., branched; densely puberulent with erect hairs 0.2 mm long, striate; tendrils absent; stipules triangular, at base of petiole, 2–7 by 2–5 mm, base adnate, densely puberulent. Leaves simple; petiole to 20 by 0.3 cm, densely puberulent (as stem); leaf blade reniform, sometimes orbicular, to 6 by 23 cm, base cordate, margin with minute mucronate teeth (4–13 teeth per cm; teeth unequal, some 0.7–0.8 mm long, others 0.3–0.5 mm) apex obtuse to subacute, adaxial side mid-green, densely puberulent (as stem), abaxial side whitish green, densely arachnoid, hairs 0.5–0.75 mm long, 5–7 main veins protruding, normally palmate, sometimes with a single midrib, sometimes 2. Inflorescence ramified, leaf-opposed, 8–10 cm long, flower clusters compact; peduncle 5–7 cm long, secondary peduncle 1.5–3 cm, tertiary peduncle 0.5–1.25 cm, pedicel 0.2–0.5 mm, densely puberulent (as stem). Buds globose to oblongate, 2 by 1.6 mm, apex slightly corniculate. Calyx green, fused, entire, cupuliform, 0.5 by 2 mm, densely puberulent with erect hairs 0.1 mm long. Petals ovate, light yellow, 1.5 by 1 mm, dorsal side densely puberulent (as calyx), apex ventral side cucullate, dorsal side slightly corniculate. Filaments flattened, 0.5–0.7 by 0.1–0.2 mm, broader at base, glabrous; anthers orbicular, medifixed, 0.5–0.6 by 0.5–0.6 mm. Disc robust with 4 lobes, each lobe 0.5–0.6 mm wide, glabrous. Style mostly cylindrical sometimes cylindrical broadening at base, robust, 0.5–0.7 by 0.3–0.4 mm; stigma inconspicuous. Fruit a berry pyriform, mostly globose with pointed apex, 6 by 4.5–5 mm, glabrous, smooth. Seed 1, 4 by 4 mm, pyriform, mostly globose with pointed base (opposite to fruit), smooth.


Thailand : NORTH-EASTERN: Phetchabun, Khon Kaen (Phu Wiang); EASTERN: Ubon Ratchathani (Ban Bung).


Distribution : Vietnam, Cambodia (lectotype).


Ecology : Deciduous forests, open dry mixed forests, pathsides, bamboo forests, fire-damaged areas, 50–200 m alt. Flowering: March–May; fruiting: June.


Vernacular : Kam phi (กำพี้), hun hu chang (หุนหูช้าง)(Ubon Ratchathani).
