Description : Leaves with terete, brown, purplish green, glabrous petiole; lamina ovate, broadly elliptic, or suborbicular in outline, 5–45 by 5–35 cm; glabrous on both sides, above glossy bright green, sometimes purplish mottled, below reddish purple to deep blue violet, sometimes brownish mottled, basal lobes acuminate, obtuse or acute, margin subentire or irregularly sinuate, apex obtuse. Flowers 4–20 cm in diam., distinctly fragrant, anthesis diurnal. Sepals 4, lanceolate to oblong-lanceolate, 2.5–9 by 0.7–2.5 cm, abaxially green, sometimes with dark purplish line or dot, glabrous, adaxially greenish white, apex obtuse or acute. Petals 8–20, inserted in 3 indistinct rows, elliptic-lanceolate to oblong-lanceolate, 2.5–6 by 0.8–2 cm, blue or white with bluish tinge, rarely purple, apex obtuse or acute. Stamens 25–50, outermost 1.5–3 cm long, yellow, with deltoid connective appendage of color corresponding to petal; filaments laminar, yellow; anthers yellow. Ovary 10–20-locular, apocarpous; stigmatic appendages slightly developed, 0.1–0.5 cm long, triangular, with obtuse, yellow, incurved apex. Fruit 3–7 cm in diam., with sepals, stamens and stigmas remnants. Seeds ellipsoid to globose, 0.5–1 mm in diam., brown, with longitudinal rows of greyish white hairs.

Distribution : Sri Lanka, India (type), Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, New Guinea.


Ecology : Fresh or brackish waters of large swamps, lakes, and rice paddies, from near sea level to 500 m alt. Flowering: late June; fruiting: September.


Vernacular : Bua phuean (บัวเผื่อน)(Central); bua na (บัวนา), bua bae (บัวแบ้), bua khap (บัวขาบ), nilobon (นิโลบล), nilubon (นิลุบล), pan dam (ป้านดำ ), pan sangkon (ป้านสังก๋อน), dok chang khon (ดอกจั๋งก๋อน)(Chiang Mai).


Uses: Some areas in northeastern Thailand the young flowers are consumed as a vegetable.
