Description : Large trees up to 40 m tall; trunk straight, usually without buttresses, occasionally small buttresses present; outer bark yellowish brown to dark brown, more or less deeply fissured; slash-mark dark red; exudate clear honey coloured. Youngest twigs flattened and strongly angled (usually 4-angled) and obviously winged on the angle, slightly brown pubescent at node; internode 1–4 cm long, shiny; uppermost pair of axillary buds 1–2 mm long; terminal buds 0.5–0.7 cm long, dark brown pubescent. Leaves glabrous; lamina oblanceolate to elliptica-oblanceolate, 8–15.5 by 3–4.5 cm; apex acute to acuminate; base cuneate; margin entire; coriaceous; drying reddish brown adaxially and light brown to greyish brown abaxially; midrib on adaxial surface depressed in a channel from the base to 1/5–1/2 of lamina length, raised on abaxial surface; lateral veins on both surfaces distinct, 7–12 veins/5 mm; petioles 1.5–3 cm long, concave adaxially and convex abaxially. Flowers axillary, covered with reddish brown pubescent, 3–6.5 cm long, 5–11(–20)-flowered; pedicels 0.7–3.3 cm long. Tepals 8; outer pair ovate to suborbicular, 6–7 by 5–6 mm, dorsally densely brown pubescent; inner one elliptic to oblong-elliptic or ligulate, 7–17.5 by 3–5 mm, dorsally pubescent; the next two with same shape and size, oblong-elliptic, 6–13 by 2–3 mm, dorsal pubescence slight forming a band. Stamens 160–196; filament 3–4.5 mm long; anther 1–1.3 mm long. Ovary 2–3 mm long; style 3–5 mm long. Fruits ellipsoid, 6.5–8 by 4.5–5 cm; apiculate to acute at apex; yellowish green when ripe; exocarp plus mesocarp 1–1.3 cm thick; endocarp 1–2 mm thick, ellipsoid, 3.5–5 by 2.5–3.5 cm.


Thailand : PENINSULAR: Chumphon, Ranong, Krabi, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Trang, Songkhla, Narathiwat.


Distribution : Malaysia (Malacca – type) to Borneo, excluding Java.


Ecology : In evergreen forests, 100–220 m alt. Flowering: May–July; fruiting: August–April.


Vernacular : Chuat (ชวด), tang hon (ตังหน)(Trang).


Uses: The wood is used for construction and furniture.
