Description : Shrub to 3 m tall; stem terete, densely greyish minute stellate hairs and larger stellate hairs. Leaves ovate-orbicular 3.5–8 by 4–8 cm, apex acute to acuminate, base, deeply cordate, margin coarsely, irregulary crenate or dentate, upper surface pale green, lower surface greyish green, densely stellate hairy, basal veins5–7. Petiole 2–4 cm long, stellate-tomentose light green, becoming dark green and often dark violet. Stipules linear, ca 5 mm long, stellate tomentose. Flower axillary, solitary. Peduncle 4.5–5 cm long, articulated near apex, densely covered with minute stellate-hairs. Calyx yellowish-green, widely campanulate, 4–5 mm long, 10–12 mm in diam., 5-lobed; lobes ovate with a prominent midnerve, 3–4 by 3–3.5 mm, apex mucronate, pubescent with minute stellate hairs, finally spreading. Corolla orange-yellow; 2.5–3 cm in diam. Petals 5, broadly ovate, 13–14 by 15–16 mm, apex rounded or emarginate, glabrous on both surfaces except sparsely hairy at base. Staminal column 7–8 mm long; filaments and anthers at apex, pale yellow; basal part conical, stellate hairy, apical tubular part short, glabrous. Ovary subglobose, ca 4 by 4 mm, apex slightly truncate, densely pubescent with silvery white hairs; stylar branches 15–20, ca 1 cm long; stigmas capitate. Schizocarp globose apex truncate, 1.2–1.5 cm long, ca 2 cm in diam., calyx much shorter than schizocurp; mericarps 15–20, flattened, reniform, ca 12 by 7–9 mm, upper part rounded with an acute patent acumen, dorsal side stellate-hairy, lateral sides subglabrous, blackish when mature. Seeds 2–3 in each mericarp, reniform, ca 3 mm long, glabrous or minute stellate hairy.
Thailand : NORTHERN: Chiang Mai (Ban Pong Noi, Doi Saket), Phitsanulok; NORTH-EASTERN: Loei (Si Than); EASTERN: Nakhon Ratchasima, (Pak Thong Chai, Sakaerat, Wang Nam Khieo); SOUTH-WESTERN: Prachup Khiri Khan (Kui Buri, Sam Roi Yot, Sangkhla, Tap Sakae), Kanchanaburi (Sai Yok); CENTRAL: Krung Thep Maha Nakhon (Bangkok), Saraburi (Na Phra Lan), Lopburi, Suphan Buri, Ayuthaya; SOUTH-EASTERN: Chon Buri (Si Chang Island).
Distribution : Pantropical also extending to subtropical regions.
Ecology : Evergreen forests along stream, on limestone hill, in open scrub jungles, in rice field, along roadsides and waste land, behind the beaches, from sea level to 400 m alt. Flowering and fruiting all year round.
Vernacular : Top taep (ตอบแตบ)(Ratchaburi); pop paep (ปอบแปบ)(Northern); phong phang (โผงผาง)(Nakhon Ratchasima); fan si (ฟันสี)(Central); ma kong khao (มะก่องข้าว)(Northern); khrop fan si (ครอบฟันสี)(Kanchanaburi); no-kuai-mi (นอก้วยมิ)(Karen-Kanchanaburi); obkhao (อบข้าว)(Loei); mak obkhao (หมากอบเข้า)(Loei).
CommonName : Chinese bell flower, Country mallow.
Uses: Root is medicinally used.
