Description : Erect or procumbent herbs, 30–60 cm tall; stem and branches terete, glabrous with glandular dots. Leaves with petioles (2–)2.5–4.5(–5) mm long, glabrous; lamina (4.5–)5.3–7.5(–8) by (0.8–)1–1.6(–2) cm, ovate, with glandular dots, glabrous on both surfaces, base cuneate or attenuate, apex acute or acuminate, margin entire with hispid hairs; secondary veins 13–15-paired, primary vein glabrous or with hispid hairs on lower surface. Ocreae cylindrical, 1.2–2.5(–3) cm long, scarious, sparsely to moderately pubescent, venation conspicuous, apex truncate, with 12–16 bristles, (3–)4–7.5(–9) mm long. Inflorescences terminal and axillary, spicate panicle, (8.5–)10–19(–24) cm long, erect or sometimes pendulous; inflorescence branches glabrous with glandular dots; side branches (3.5–)5.5–10(–15) cm long, filiform, lax-flowered, rachis conspicuous; leafy bracts 10–25(–40) by 2–4(–6) mm, ovate, apex acute, margin with hispid hairs. Flowers 4–6 in an ocreola; pedicels (2.5–)3–4 mm long, glabrous with glandular dots; bracteoles 1.5–2 mm long, hyaline, with 2 veins; ocreolae completely enclosing rachis, 2.5–3.5 mm long, with glandular dots, apex obtuse or acute, margin entire with hispid hairs. Tepals 5, white or pink; lobes 1.5–2.5 by 1–1.5 mm, ovate, apex obtuse, glandular dots present, veins 3; tube 1–1.2(–1.5) mm long, glandular nectaries 8. Stamens 8, in two whorls, outer ones 1–1.5 mm long, inner ones (1.5–)1.5–2 mm long; anthers white. Styles 3, (0.8–)1–1.8 mm long; stigmas capitate, white. Fruits with scarious perianth, triangular, (2–)2.1–2.5 by (1.4–)1.5–1.9 mm, shiny black.

Distribution : Europe (type), Russia, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Sikkim, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, China, Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Java, the Philippines, Australia, N America.
Ecology : River banks, rice fields, streamsides in hill evergreen forests, 300–1,000 m alt.
