Description : Tree, 2.5–15 m tall; twigs smooth, pale or ashy brown, subglabrous (rarely tomentose), glabrescent, 2–4.5 mm diam.; thorns absent. Leaves: petiole sparsely hairy, glabrescent, 2–5 cm long, articulate at both ends or not; lamina subglabrous, (sparsely) pubescent, glabrescent (hairs remaining in basal nerve axils), (ovate or) broadly ovate or subcircular, occasionally coarsely toothed, (8–)10–20 by (5–)7.5–15.5 cm, base asymmetric, broadly cordate, apex (long) acute-acuminate; 5(–7)-veined from the base; lateral veins 3(–5) per side; intercostal venation thin, ± scalariform to coarsely reticulate. Inflorescences pendulous at lower side of branches, subglabrous (rarely hairy), simple, dichasial, 2–4-branched, (2–)5–10(–20)-flowered; peduncle (1.5–)2–2.5(–3) cm long. Flowers: pedicel 3–5(–10) mm long; corolla in bud 7–12 mm long; ovary and calyx sparsely hairy, 3(–4) mm long, limb ca 0.5 mm long, 2–3 mm wide, 6- or 7-lobed, lobes ca 0.5 mm long, acute; petals 6 or 7, glabrous or short-hairy, 8–10 mm long; stamens 6 or 7, filaments thickened, ca 3 mm long, inside hairy, anthers ca 10 mm long, connective glabrous; style glabrous or sparsely hairy, ca 10 mm long, stigma subglobose. Fruit 2–10 per infructescence, ripening (purple)blackish, (sub)glabrous, ovoid, (0.6–)1(–1.3) cm long, superficially ribbed.


Thailand : NORTHERN: Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai (Doi Chiang Dao, Doi Suthep-Pui NP, Ban Mae Hae, Doi Luang NP), Chiang Rai, Lampang (Chae Son NP); SOUTH-WESTERN: Kanchanaburi (Khwae Noi Basin), Phetchaburi (Kaeng Krachan NP).


Distribution : Widespread: Africa, India east to China and Japan, southeast through Indochina (Vietnam – type) and Malesia east to the Philippines and Flores. Not known from Sumatra, Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo, and Sulawesi.


Ecology : Mostly along streams or near water in evergreen or seasonal forests, often with bamboo; granite, shale, and sandstone bedrock, occasionally on limestone; 150–1,175 m alt. (to 3000 m in China). Flowering: April and May; fruiting: May–September.
