Description : Tree to 30 m tall; resin clear white. Indumentum mealy and densely very fine reddish brown tufted tomentose on young twigs, buds, stipules, petioles, midrib, inflorescences, flower buds, ovary and nuts. Stipules narrowly lanceolate, to ca 2 cm long. Leaves oblong to oblanceolate, 14–25 by 4–7.5 cm, coriaceous, glabrous or sparsely tomentose on lower surface and midrib below; base obtuse to acute; apex acute to cuspidate; secondary nerves 19–25 on each side; tertiary nerves scalariform; petioles 1–1.7 cm long; young leaves light green. Inflorescences 5–12 cm long; branchlets to 14 cm long; flower buds lanceolate, to ca 7 mm long; pedicels 2–3 mm long. Calyx lobes ovate-lanceolate; 2 longer lobes with obtuse apex, 3 by 1.5 mm; 3 shorter lobes with acuminate apex, 2.7 by 1.5 mm. Petals white, obovate-lanceolate, ca 1.7 by 0.7 cm, slightly contorted, strongly fragrant. Stamens typical, ca half as long as the ovary; anthers ovate-oblong; connective-appendages short, acute. Ovary broadly ovoid, 1.5 by 1.5 mm; style columnar, ca 1 mm long; stigma typical. Fruiting calyx lobes divided to base, sparsely tomentose, dilated and recurved at base; 2 lobes wing-like, tapering to base, 7.5–10.5 by 2–3.3 cm; 3 short lobes ovate, acuminate, 2–3 by 1–1.5 cm; fruit pedicels 3–6 mm long, depressed to receptacle. Nut subglobose, 0.8–1 by 0.7–1 cm; style remnant apiculate.

Distribution : Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Borneo.


Ecology : Evergreen forests, lowland to ridges, 50–300 m alt. Flowering: April; fruiting: July.


Vernacular : Phan cham bala (พันจำบาลา).


Notes: This species is distinguished by having scalariform tertiary nerves, a large number of secondary nerves and the largest leaves of any Vatica found in Thailand.
