Description : Tree to 40 m tall, buttressed; bark smooth to scaly, scattered lenticellate; resin dark purple-brown. Indumentum puberulent and minute shortly fine tufted tomentose on buds, stipules, twigs, petioles and inflorescences. Buds ovoid, ca 5 mm long. Stipules oblong to lanceolate, 0.9–1.2 by 0.1–0.2 cm. Leaves elliptic to oblong, 10–22 by 5–8 cm, sparsely tomentose with minute red glands on lower surface, reddish brown when dry; base cuneate to rounded; apex acuminate, tapering to ca 1 cm long; midrib depressed above; secondary nerves 9–11 on each side; domatia rare, pore-like, glabrous; tertiary nerves densely scalariform; petioles 1.5–2.5 cm long, often rugose. Inflorescences 3–9 cm long, singly branched; branchlets to 1.5 cm long, bearing 2–8 flowers, rather dense; bracteoles ovate, ca 3 mm long, early caducous; flower buds ovate-lanceolate, ca 1 by 0.2–0.3 cm; pedicels 0.5–2 mm long. Calyx lobes ovate-deltoid, 2.5–3–3.5 by 2–3 mm, densely pubescent outside. Petals oblong, ca 1–1.8 by 3 cm, strongly contorted, dark red, margin white inside, densely villose outside. Stamens ca 15, in 3 whorls; filaments lorate, 1.5–2 mm long; anthers with 4 pollen sacs, subglobose, ca 0.3 by 0.3 mm; connective-appendages slender, ca as long as anthers or slightly shorter, reflexed. Ovary and stylopodium conical, slightly constricted, 3–4 by 1.5–2 mm, densely puberulent; style filiform, 1–1.5 mm long; stigma obscurely lobed. Fruiting calyx lobes obscurely saccate, thickened, broad at base, enclosing less than half of the nut, reddish pink when young, sparsely pubescent; 3 longer lobes ca as long as the nut or slightly longer, 2–5 by 0.5–1 cm, veins obscure; 2 shorter lobes 1–3 by 0.2–0.3 cm; fruit pedicels stout, ca 1 mm long. Nut ovoid-oblong, 2.5–4 by 1.5–2 cm, densely puberulent; style remnant ca 2 mm long.


Thailand : PENINSULAR: Narathiwat (Waeng, Sukhirin).


Distribution : Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra (type).


Ecology : Evergreen forests, lowland, hillsides to ridges, 200–600 m alt. Flowering: February–May; fruiting: May–October.


Vernacular : Mak on (หมากอ่อน), phayom khao (พะยอมเขา)(Narathiwat).
