Description : Deciduous trees, 15–30 m tall; bark irregularly fissured. Indumentum shortly fine pubescent on buds, stipules, young twigs, petioles and lower surface of leaves, or rarely most parts glabrous. Buds ellipsoid, ca 4 mm long. Stipules minute, linear-lanceolate. Leaves elliptic to oblong, 5–15(–20) by 2.5–8 cm, thinly coriaceous, glabrous or with fine cream peltates scales on lower surface, densely pubescent in seedling, dried leaves brownish green; base broadly cuneate, rounded to subcordate; apex broadly acute, obtuse; midrib depressed above; secondary nerves 14–20 on each side, occasionally bifurcate, arching near the margin; domatia if present pore-like, glabrous; tertiary nerves scalariform; petioles 2–5 cm long. Inflorescences sometimes ramiflorous, 3–12 cm long, glabrous to glabrescent; singly to doubly branched; branchlets to 5 cm long, bearing 2–4 flowers; bracteoles very early caducous; flower buds lanceolate, 0.7–1.2 by 0.3–0.5 cm long; pedicels stout, to ca 2 mm long. Calyx lobes narrowly deltoid, 3–5 by 2 mm, ninutely pubescent outside. Petals ovate-oblong, 1–1.3 by 0.4–0.5 cm, cream to white, tinged pink at base, fragrant. Stamens 15, in 3 whorls; filaments ca as long as anthers or slightly shorter; anthers lanceolate, ca 1 mm long; connective-appendages filiform, ca twice as long as anthers, glabrous. Ovary conical, ca 1 by 1 mm, glabrous; style slender, 2–3 mm long; stigma trifid. Fruiting calyx lobes wing-like, saccate at base, thickened, enclosing most of the nut, green when young, glabrous; 3 longer lobes 4–10 by 0.7–1.5 cm, narrow above the neck; 2 shorter lobes 2.5–6 by 0.3–0.5 cm; fruit pedicels 2–3 mm long. Nut ovoid, 1–2 by 0.8–1 cm, glabrous, not smooth; style remnant 3–5 mm long.

Distribution : India, Myanmar (Tenasserim), Laos, Cambodia, S Vietnam, Upper Peninsular Malaysia.
Ecology : Mixed deciduous, dipterocarp-oak, dry evergreen and evergreen forests, sometimes in beach forests, to 1,500 m alt. Flowering: December–April; fruiting: February–May.
